Accessible Destinations: Day Tripping in AC

Spring is here and it is time to get out of the house, have fun and get some exercise, too! Atlantic City, New Jersey makes for a great day trip. It is a short ride from Philadelphia, has plenty of accessible parking, and is pretty easy to get around for those of us in wheelchairs. Plus, your arms will feel GREAT after pushing all day on the boardwalk!

I have done this trip tons of times and start my adventures by parking at Caesars. I strategically park there as it allows me access to the best of both worlds in that it is close to the outlet shops, and the boardwalk. After parking head towards the outlets and enjoy easy, flat access to lots of great stores (don’t forget to Google Atlantic City outlets, and print your discount coupons, too!).

After working your way through the outlets, head on up to the boardwalk. It is flat and very easy to get around, and, if you are in a wheelchair, you won’t be alone. I often see lots of others in chairs and scooters enjoying the day. Going end to end is a great workout, and, when you get tired, duck on in to a casino to cool off, use a bathroom, or get something to eat.

If you really want to make a trip out of it, plan to stay over. Atlantic City hotels have lots of accessible rooms. When you book, be sure to ask for a room with a roll in shower if you need it, and ask again when you check in. Adding an overnight gives you a better experience, as you can then see a show, enjoy the free light show on the boardwalk, or just people watch as the town comes to life.

Life is too short not to enjoy each day, and this is an easy outing you can do by yourself, with a friend or with the whole family.
