Former Patient “Gooch” Nelson Releases Debut Album

If you pick up today’s Philadelphia Inquireryou’ll find a familiar face gracing the Style & Soul section. Former patient Ryan “Gooch” Nelson is profiled by writer A.D. Amorosi on the eve of the debut album release for his band Gooch and The Motion, Comin’ Home.

Gooch was in a car accident back in 2004 and spent six months at Magee. Since then, he’s returned often to share his gift of music with Magee patients. He even formed a nonprofit, Music in Motion Foundation, to bring music into hospitals.

He tells WHYY, “To take your mind off the institutionalization and therapy, it’s 90% mental, 10% physical. It doesn’t seem like that, because you’re learning a new physical thing. But like anything else, it’s mental.”

Gooch and The Motion performs at World Cafe Live tomorrow night. For tickets and more information, visit worldcafelive.com.
