“There is Life After SCI”: A Message from Our Peer Mentors

All month long, we’ve been sharing stories and news about SCI in recognition of Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month. Today may be the final day of September, but it is not the end of our discussion on spinal cord injuries.

There is life after SCI – and it’s pretty great. But right after your injury, the light at the end of the tunnel may be hard to see. You may feel like it’s the end – but it’s really just the beginning. But don’t just take our word for it. Learn from the members of Magee’s Spinal Cord Injury Peer Mentor Program. Misconceptions about SCI? They’ve heard them all – and they’ve proven them all wrong. Take a look.

I won’t be able to have a normal social life.

It will always be this hard – it will never get any easier.

I won’t be able to go back to school.

I’ll never be able to be a parent.

I can’t go back to my old job – I’ll never be able to start a new career.

I’ll never be able to move forward.

While everyone’s experiences are different, one thing is clear: there is life after SCI. To view more of these videos from Magee’s peer mentors and other people living with SCI across the country, visit FacingDisability.com. To learn more about Magee’s SCI Peer Mentor Program and support groups and how you can become involved, contact Marie Protesto (yes, the Marie from the videos!) at peers@mageerehab.org or (215) 587-3174.

We want to hear from you! What misconceptions did you have about life after SCI, and how did you prove them wrong?
