The Greater Woodbury Chamber of Commerce is celebrating its 11th year of Gloucester County Dancing With The Stars. Over the years, this event has raised over 1.5 million dollars for various charities. This year, the Adam Taliaferro Foundation was chosen to compete for the prize of best dancer and best fundraiser. Luckily Magee’s very own Mary Schmidt sits on the Taliaferro Board and has been dancing since her childhood. At Magee, Mary is Director of the Spinal Cord Injury Program, but by night she a tap dancing rock star. Two rounds of competition have already occurred, and Mary got rave reviews. On July 25, Mary grabbed the spotlight with her Waltz and Meranga. In round two, her Rhumba and the Jitterbug were showcased.
Mary’s involvement with the Taliaferro Foundation began 16 years ago when she met Adam Taliaferro when he was a patient at Magee, recovering from spinal cord injury. Mary was asked to join the Board of Directors of the Taliaferro Foundation as a clinical and medical advocate and has been active with the organization since. She enjoys supporting their mission, to assist anyone who incurs a catastrophic spinal or brain injury, and she has been actively involved in supporting the Awards Program, the Medical Symposiums, and the emotional support for patients and families served. The Adam Taliaferro Foundation has been able to support individuals with purchasing equipment not covered by insurance that are considered essential to their care and function. They also have helped with home renovations, transportation, attendant care, and other items that contribute to the individual and family’s well-being and continued ability to live in the community. Mary says it has been a privilege to work with a group of volunteers whose sole mission is to make the lives of others better!
Mary is practicing every night and doing everything she can to win the best dancer category, but she needs your help to win the fundraising challenge.
