New PSA Challenges America’s Views on Disability

Here at Magee, we’re all about focusing on abilities instead of limitations. So we were very excited to see a new public service announcement that promotes that very idea.  The PSA from the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD), which was created in partnership with Comcast and NBCUniversal, challenges viewers to appreciate the positive aspects of disability and breakdown some seriously outdated stereotypes – and it is coming to a TV near you.

We think the PSA is pretty cool, but one thing did stand out. While there is diversity in disability and ethnicity, there is not any diversity in age – all featured speakers are young adults. But AAPD had a good reason for that:

According to research conducted by AAPD, the current generation of young adults with disabilities is better educated, more experienced, and ready to contribute to society in ways that were unavailable to previous generations. Yet, the common experience of these young people is that they are less likely to find work for which they are qualified, less likely to get a promotion, and less likely to be considered for senior positions.

The PSA is currently airing on Comcast cable channels and NBC, whose fall line-up includes 3 shows that prominently feature people living with disabilities: The Michael J. Fox Show, Ironside and Growing Up Fisher.
