SLP Spotlight: Aimee Aranguren

In honor of Better Hearing and Speech Month, we will be highlighting selected Magee Speech-Language Pathologists throughout the month of May.  Today’s spotlight is on Aimee Aranguren, an SLP making a difference in the lives of the patients and families on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th floors here at Magee.

Please tell me a little bit more about your background.

I received my B.A. in communication sciences and disorders at the University of Florida and went on to receive my M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology at Nova Southeastern University. I was born and raised in Fort Lauderdale, FL, and moved to Philadelphia 3.5 years ago to start my career at Magee!

Why did you decide to become a Speech-Language Pathologist?

My Dad said I came out of the womb talking. He said that if there is anyone that can make a plant talk back, it’s me. So combine that with my love of helping others, and speech therapy is a perfect match!

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

Hearing a patient say, “I love you” for the first time to their loved ones never gets old and makes me smile every time.

Tell us about an experience that solidified for you that you made the right career choice.

I experience moments regularly that make me so happy to be an SLP. Most recently, I worked with a woman who was using an electronic speech generating device to communicate with others. One of the things she missed most was speaking with her grandson, who is a toddler. I created a page on her device with things to say to her grandson. When the grandson came, my patient used the device to speak to him. The grandson loved the page, was giggling, and was so happy to communicate with his grandma again. Tears flowed from everyone present to see this beautiful moment.

What are some of your hobbies and interests outside of work?

In my free time I like to walk around Philly and visit the parks, read a good book, try new restaurants and recipes that are vegetarian friendly, and sing songs I don’t really know the lyrics to while making up my own! My guilty pleasures are also reality TV and chocolate!
