Support Magee’s Display at the Philadelphia Flower Show!

Sometimes, you need to stop and smell the roses, and Team Magee is ready to do just that at the Philadelphia Flower Show this year!

The Philadelphia Flower Show–a “must experience” event that has been dazzling visitors since 1829–invites thousands of people to enjoy an oasis of flowers, beautiful landscapes, and exquisite gardens that have been carefully cultivated by the country’s top designers. This year, the work and contributions of Magee’s Creative Therapy Center & Healing Gardens will be featured among the show’s magical displays in a balcony exhibit overlooking the Schuylkill River.

Paying homage to the show’s 2018 theme, “Wonders of Water,” the display doubles as an accessible therapeutic garden that allows people of all abilities to enjoy the space. Paintings by Magee artists, a painted oar, adaptive tools, and wind chimes are just a few of the garden’s features, forming a creative, sensory experience for attendees.

The display was created in conjunction with Radnor Middle School’s Watershed Program. The students  worked directly with Magee staff to incorporate elements from the hospital’s horticultural program, run by Horticultural Therapist Jeannette Glennon-Morrissey, as well as its art and music therapy programs, which ultimately bring the space to life. Encouraging self-expression and healing, this colorful and collaborative effort was spearheaded by Magee supporter Banny Ackerman, retired Radnor Middle School teacher and parent of former Magee patient Katie Samson.

Art-Reach, a Philadelphia-based organization that works to make arts and culture more accessible for people within the disability community, has provided tickets to the show on Friday, March 9, for several Magee Riverfront patients whose artwork is featured in the Radnor display. In addition to enjoying the wondrous work of others at Philadelphia Flower Show, our patients will be able to see their own artistic creations in action, coordinated by Magee Art Therapists Alex Shaikh and Julie Nolan.

The Philadelphia Flower Show will run from Saturday, March 3, to Sunday, March 11.
