Dolls – kids of all ages enjoy playing with them, but one company has taken the toy to a new level. Makies are the newest trend in dolls: each doll can be designed and custom made. They’re a a small company based in London, but they ship their custom dolls all over the world. You may think, “So, what’s the big deal? There are tons of dolls on the market that can be custom made.” Well, that is true. But with these dolls, they have added special accessories to represent different populations of children. These accessories include hearing aids, walking devices, glasses, and facial birthmarks. The campaign #toyslikeme launched on Facebook and Twitter to gain awareness and spread the word about these unique dolls. As a result, the company has provided a chance to submit requests for new accessories. According to their website, they have a request list that is growing of over 100 suggestions! WOW. I think this is such a terrific way to support all children and make every child feel more comfortable with what makes them unique. In addition, it can also be a great way for children to better understand having a loved one with a physical or brain injury. This paves the way to more open discussions about disabilities. Kudos and hats off to the Makies company. I hope they continue to expand their inventory. #toyslikeme is GENIUS, and it’s about time!
