Twice as Nice: Magee Celebrates Two DAISY Award Winners

It’s no secret that Magee is full of amazing, hardworking nurses. For the second time, the hospital has come together to honor one of these outstanding nurses with the DAISY Award. Only this time around, there was not one award winner but TWO!

An internal committee reviewed many glowing nominations from Magee patients, caregivers, and fellow staff members. The committee determined that two nurses were so extraordinary, they both deserved to receive the award this year: Rey Reyna, RN, BSN and Joann Rudi, RN, CRRN!

Rey is a nurse on the 5th floor Spinal Cord Injury Unit at the main hospital. In their nominations, Rey’s coworkers described him as one of the most selfless nurses they have ever worked with. “His bedside manner towards the patients is exceptional. He is not afraid to jump in anywhere he is needed without hesitation,” one wrote. Another said, “He is a positive person always smiling regardless of the situation and is a great team player.”

About Joann, a nurse at the Riverfront outpatient center, one caregiver wrote, “As a mother of a Magee patient, I can’t put into words the appreciation our family has felt for Joann. She always goes above and beyond her duties.” A coworker said, “I am so impressed by the relationship Joann builds with each of her patients… They all respect and love her!”

The DAISY Foundation was formed in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died at age 33 of complications from an auto-immune disease. When deciding how to honor Patrick’s memory, his family thought the one positive thing they could hold onto from the experience of his hospitalization was the amazingly skillful and compassionate care he received from his nurses. They felt compelled to express their profound gratitude to nurses for the work they do for patients and their families every day, and that’s how the DAISY Award was born.

Today, the DAISY Award is presented to nurses at more than 1,864 healthcare facilities in 15 countries worldwide.

Congratulations, Rey and Joann!
