Volunteers Make All the Difference at Magee

Last week, President Obama announced an official proclamation for National Volunteer Week, encouraging all Americans to respond to the call volunteer of service.  The President recognized that “volunteering rates are the highest they have been in years. More Americans are answering the call to serve — not for fanfare or attention, but because they want to give back.”  This call to service, and dedication to giving back, rings true for all of our volunteers at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital.

On April 25, 2013, Magee hosted the annual volunteer appreciation luncheon with the theme “Magee Volunteers, Making a Difference in the Lives of Others.” Meg Rider, Guest Relations and Volunteer Services Manager at Magee, welcomed more than 75 guests and honored all volunteers from past and present, and commending those who have given an exceptional amount of time to Magee.  Dr. Jack Carroll, President and CEO of Magee also greeted and thanked the volunteers for their dedication to our patients and families, “making all the difference in the compassionate care each patient and family receives.”  Twenty-four Magee volunteers received certificates for donating between 450 to 6,000 hours of service to the organization.

The Magee Extraordinary Achievement Award was given to Barbara Hughes who has volunteered more than 20,000 hours at Magee, more hours given by any volunteer at the hospital.  Barbara was honored with a sideshow tribute highlighting her almost thirty years as as a Magee volunteer, along with remarks from Magee staff including Jeffery Doyle, Concierge, who thanked Barbara for her dedication to the providing patient activities and supporting his department, and Ron Siggs, Vice President for Development, announced that Magee would be nominating Barbara for the 2013 Philadelphia Eagles Community Quarterback Award.

All guests received a gift of appreciation for their help and enjoyed Mexican fare served by Magee staff member volunteers. The luncheon was coordinated by Stephanie Rivera, Guest Relations and Volunteer Services Support Coordinator, and the delicious catering was created by Magee’s Dining Services staff.
