Welcome Spring with Your Own Garden

Weary winter folks… your plight is almost over! This week not only marks the first day of spring (yahoo!), but it’s also National Horticultural Therapy Week AND National Creative Arts Therapy Week. We can’t think of a better way to welcome the new season than with some color and creativity of our own.

As Magee’s horticultural therapist, I know a thing or two about gardening. And I am here to tell you that anyone can do it. Yes, that includes YOU! To kick off my favorite season of the year, here are a few tips to starting and caring for your very own garden.

It’s Veggie Time!

There are few things better than vegetables straight from your own garden. And now is a great season to grow some of your favorites. Stock up on beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, lettuce varieties, radish, spinach, cauliflower or Swiss chard. They will thrive in the spring!

Get Ready to Plant

Okay, okay, we know there is still snow on the ground in Philly. But the ground will eventually thaw out. You can put your “cool” season vegetables out in late March/early April.  But in the meantime, start following seeds indoors. Put them under a plant light or in a sunny window.

March is also a good month to gradually remove winter mulches from garden beds or containers and get your soil ready for spring. Start by getting a soil test. You can then add organic matter to your garden and turn over soil. Prune out winter damage in trees and shrubs.
