Has a spinal cord injury, brain injury or stroke left you with the inability to utilize your hands or arms?

Has a spinal cord injury, brain injury or stroke left you with the inability to utilize your hands or arms?

Are you having difficulty dressing yourself or brushing your teeth?

Are you not able to open, close or hold items in your hand?

The Upper Limb Reconstruction  Clinic may be an option for you.

Magee Rehabilitation Hospital, in conjunction with The Rothman Institute, offers an Upper Limb (UL) Reconstruction Clinic, where you can be evaluated by Certified Upper Limb Surgeons and Licensed Occupational Therapists to determine what interventions may be appropriate for you to increase functional use of your hand(s)/arm(s).

Anyone referred to the UL Clinic must be evaluated for clinical and/or surgical appropriateness and medical stability.

Recommendations may include:

  • Occupational therapy for splinting or strengthening
  • Surgical intervention for upper limb skeletal stabilizations or contracture releases
  • Surgical intervention for tendon repairs, tendon lengthening/shortening, or tendon transfer
  • Combinations of options listed above, plus post-op therapy and care

Who is appropriate?

  • 14 years or older
  • Diagnosis of spinal cord injury, brain injury, stroke or any other neurological disorder
  • Dysfunction of one or both upper limbs
  • Medically stable
  • No open skin
  • Motivation to participate
  • Family and/or caregiver support

What to bring to your appointment:

  • Prescription for upper limb clinic from your physician
  • Pre-certification referral from you insurance company (if applicable)
  • Insurance cards
  • Picture ID
  • List of daily medications
  • Any hand or arm braces that you currently use

We will work with you to investigate your personal insurance benefit options for this service.
