Therapeutic Recreation

The recreational therapist uses leisure activities to improve various skills.

Recreational therapists use leisure to help people reach goals in rehabilitation. They focus on getting people back to doing what they like to do.

Sometimes recreational therapists work with people to explore new ways that they can participate in leisure. They may show people adaptive sports equipment, special tools to be able to play games, and new ways to access technology.

Recreational therapists help educate patients and their families about getting back into the community and doing things outside of their homes. They also work with other treatment team members to take people outside before they leave Magee, so that they can practice being in the community. These outings may include trips on public transportation, to local stores, and to various Philadelphia landmarks to practice skills needed in community settings.

All recreational therapists at Magee maintain their certification as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist.
