This program helps people adapt physically and emotionally to an amputation.

The rehabilitation process at Magee Rehabilitation is designed to ease the trauma that results from the loss of a limb and help the individual adapt both physically and emotionally to necessary lifestyle changes.

Magee's comprehensive approach to amputation care involves the latest in technology, combined with traditional, hands-on interventions. Program services are designed along two tracks: traumatic amputation (accidental severing) and disease-related amputation (diabetes, necrosis). Different services and methods of treatment may also be required depending upon whether upper or lower extremities are involved. Services may be delivered in inpatient and/or outpatient programs depending on the unique needs of each individual. In all services, goals for function and independence are addressed during the various phases of rehabilitation.

The pre-prosthetic phase includes strengthening, mobility and endurance training, and preparation for fitting with a temporary prosthesis if that is a goal. The pre-prosthetic phase of care may occur in an inpatient or outpatient setting based on individual needs, and is provided by an interdisciplinary team of clinicians with expertise in the rehabilitation of individuals with amputation.

After the pre-prosthetic phase, the individual is then followed by Mageeโ€™s Amputee Clinic to determine when the residual limb is sufficiently healed and ready to begin the prosthetic phase of rehabilitation. The Amputee Clinic team consists of a Magee physician specialist as well as Nurse, Physical Therapist and Prosthetist (the clinician who will ultimately construct the needed prosthetic device) all with expertise in post-amputation rehabilitation care. The interdisciplinary team meets and assesses individuals throughout their prosthetic phase of rehabilitation to determine when training with a temporary and then permanent prosthesis can begin.

With the temporary prostheses, individuals can begin to adjust to the use of the limb, incorporate it into their daily living skills and develop tolerance for wearing the artificial limb. This training may be provided in an inpatient setting or outpatient setting again depending on the medical and functional needs of the individual.

When continued healing and physical fitness allow, the individual will be prescribed and receive their permanent prosthesis. Ongoing training will continue, likely in an outpatient setting, to further develop improved functional skills with the new prosthesis and maintain safety. Magee maintains active relationships with several orthotics and prosthetics providers, to insure ease of access, fair price and good service for patients needing these devices. Magee's follow-up services in Amputee Clinic help patients manage their care and amputation needs for the rest of their lives.

Enrollment considerations for Magee's amputation rehabilitation programs are liberal. Magee welcomes case managers, rehabilitation specialists, discharge planners and family members for on-site tours and informational interviews.

Amputee Support at Magee

To further meet all needs of the individuals served with amputations, both physical and emotional, Magee sponsors a unique, community-based, peer support group whose members are available to help new patients before and after their amputations. Called AMP-PEER, this all-volunteer group of persons with amputations provides encouragement and advice. Monthly group meetings are conducted at Magee and individual sessions are available throughout the continuum of care. To learn more about Amputee Support at Magee, click here.
