Day Rehabilitation

The Day Rehab program is a comprehensive, flexible program which  meets the individual rehabilitation needs of the patient while allowing them to  transition to their home each evening.

The Day Rehab program at Magee is a (JCAHO/CARF Accredited) comprehensive, flexible program which will meet the individual rehabilitation needs of the patient while allowing them to make the transition to their home each evening. Patients who are admitted into the program no longer require continuous medical and nursing supervision. Day Rehab may replace a person’s acute inpatient rehabilitation stay after an injury or illness or complement the initial rehabilitation by aiding the patient’s transition back to home and the community.

Program Components

Day Rehab is an individualized program which is medically prescribed and includes individual and group therapies.

Day Rehab patients may receive the following:

  • Physical therapy
  • Speech therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Nursing services
  • Recreational therapy
  • Psychological counseling
  • Case management
  • Patient/family teaching
  • Pre-vocational services
  • Art therapy
  • Horticultural therapy

A patient may be scheduled for some of the following groups, depending on individual treatment goals.

Group therapies available include:

  • Community living skills
  • Daily living skills
  • Sensorimotor groups
  • Social Skills
  • Support/Coping group
  • Recreation Group
  • Nutrition Education group
  • Home exercise

A lunch time meal is provided to all patients enrolled in the program.

The Day Rehab program can range from one to eight weeks with individual goals dictating the length of the program.

Admission Criteria

  • History of a brain injury, spinal cord injury, amputation or other neurological or medical diagnoses
  • Medical stability
  • Appropriate rehabilitation goals which require a community based program
  • Patient motivation and willingness to actively participate in treatment goals
  • Stable behavior
  • Family and/or social support that provides assistance in integration of the rehabilitation program into the home and community
  • No active drug or alcohol abuse
  • Appropriate physical level of functioning
  • Ability to communicate basic needs
  • Appropriate Funding

Group Components

Sensorimotor group – The focus is to improve body position awareness, coordination, balance, flexibility, endurance and cognitive skills. (separate tract for SCI)

Community living skills group – This group includes a weekly trip. The curriculum includes money management, time management, consumer skills, communication, etc.

Social skills group – The curriculum addresses the appropriate behaviors in interaction with other individuals and groups in a variety of social situations.

Daily living skills group – The purpose is to teach skills in such activities as health maintenance, personal care, home management, and community integration. (separate tract for SCI)

Coping/support group – Led by case management and psychology this group meets one hour per week. The purpose is to give individuals an opportunity to share concerns with one another and to work together on the issue of coping with a disability.

Recreation Group – This group incorporates improving social, cognitive and physical skills through recreational and leisure activities. Horticulture and art therapy are a component of this group.

Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Home exercise-The function of this group is to provide comprehensive functional and educational activities to individuals with SCI and similar diagnoses. Maximizing the independence of the SCI patient and ensuring safety in the home and community is the goal of this group.

Day Rehab can be an alternative or adjunct to inpatient rehabilitation for those who have a community living situation that is able to support their medical and functional needs. The Day Rehab Program offers the structure and intensity of a full day of therapeutic activities. This option should be considered for those patients who are medically stable and whose goals could be met through this intensity of service.

The Day Rehab program is conducted at Magee Riverfront facility, conveniently located at 1500 S. Columbus Blvd. in South Philadelphia, easily accessible from Center City and Southern New Jersey. Public transportation to the Riverfront is also available, as is FREE parking. The program is open Monday through Friday.
