Riding the WAV: Uber Increases Accessible Fleet

Earlier this year, Uber increased its fleet of wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAVs) circulating on Philadelphia streets. So what has the change meant for Philadelphians who need an accessible ride-sharing option? Peer Coordinator Ruth Black shares her experience.

I have been using the Uber WAV service for the past month or so, and it has been really convenient! The vehicles are mostly mini vans, and the drivers are well trained and conscientious about seatbelting me in and securely tying down my chair at all four points.

It is a great relief knowing I can get a ride whenever needed with a minimal wait. In Center City, I have gotten a ride in as fast as 10 minutes and waited only as long as 20 minutes. Uber WAV services all of Philadelphia and beyond. Many chair users I’ve spoken to were not aware of the expansion of accessible vehicles. Likewise, Lyft offers accessible vehicles when you enable “Access Mode” in the app settings.

Now, between the subway, buses, and accessible ride-sharing services, getting around Philly is getting much easier.
